Dry Flies, Warm Skies and Big Blue Moon

The Drake Magazine feature on The Reef Fly Shop

Conditions are excellent right now only if you ignore the presence of some floating debris. Cool water temps and far fewer weed beds than normal. The floaties are not wide spread but do concentrate in some areas and in compacted current seams. If you encounter this just row top the next spot…easy solution. The river is in good shape all the way through Casper. We had a dozen boats out again yesterday and most guides reported good fishing and excellent at times. The groups on the upper smoked then in the AM with PMD bug rigs. The afternoon slowed for all parties it seemed like. The couple boats from Government Bridge were consistent with spotty moments of glory and defeat. We only saw one other boat all day long, that is what I love about Grey Reef. Soft hackles, beaded headed PT and other similar critters proved to be no match for the power of the foam wing RS2. No report yet from the group Bessemer to Robertson however. We had a couple boats opt for a split float. What is a SPLIT FLOAT? It is an advantage we carry due to the fact that we have our own shuttle service and real private access. It is also evident that we make sure your trip is the best experience possible rather than focusing on our bottom line. These groups floated 1/2 days on the 2 sections they felt would provide the best tailored trips for their guests…it was a smashing success. Trico spinner dry fly fishing in the AM and light nymph rigs for the remainder of the day.

Bear Trap Summer Music Festival starts this AM and Los Lobos will closing out the evening, tomorrow Jalan Crossland will prime the crowd’s anticipation for the Charlie Daniels Band. Other notables are hot air balloon rides, carp fishing, mountain biking, floating through the water water park etc. Casper is a cool place to be this time of year.
