Trico Time!

As we hit the middle of August Tricos are in full swing here on the Reef and the fishing is still great! We are seeing a very healthy Trico hatch from early in the morning until about 9-10am. If you’re nymphing black RS2s and Mayhem Midges have been the ticket. We haven’t been seeing too much surface action for the Trico hatch, but if you hit it on the right day you can have some shots at sipping trout. Throwing smaller mayfly patterns or trico specific flies might get these sippers to eat. As the day goes on PMD’s, Yellow Sallies, Caddis, and Stoneflies have all been in the mix and productive. As was the case in early August, some sort of flashy bead head with an emerger off the back can’t really be beaten when nymphing. We have yet to see hopper action pick up, but that may mean just a later and greater season on that front. Of course we have to cover the topic of grass and weeds in the river as well because this time of year is when they really pop up. Surprisingly this year it isn’t that bad yet, but it seems like the grass is growing by the minute. The key to fishing when the weeds really come in is finding where channels open up and drifting your nymph rigs through there. Looking for faster current and deeper shelves where there grass doesn’t grow as high should be your target. Your first instinct may be to shorten up and lighten up in order to drift over the weeds, but you’d be surprised to see how many trout are actually living in the grass, making drifting a little bit deeper through the channels much more effective.

That’s all for this report, hopefully next report we will be able to give you all some good news about the hopper bite!

Hello August!

Summer in Central Wyoming is in full swing!  As most of you know it’s been interesting for the Rocky Mountain West this year.  Low snowpack, very little spring moisture-accompanied with hot and dry conditions.  Not good!  Lots and lots of earlier closures and hoot-owl restrictions have become a very popular theme.  Fortunate for us, conditions on the North Platte remain good.  Driving out to the shop and lodge last week, we took temperatures from Bessmer Bend to Grey Reef Dam.  All temperatures were taken in the middle of the day and we are happy to report 62F or cooler at all locations.  The water temperature below Grey Reef Dam was 55F, approximately.  So, how’s the fishing?  Somewhere between good and great, just depends on the day.  PMDs, sallies, caddis and tricos are whats popping and the fish are keyed in.  Your hard pressed to beat a BH of some sort with an RS2 dropper, if your running the nymph program.  Hoppers?  We are starting to see some fish look up for hoppers and that should only improve as we move later in the month. Streamers have been producing some big fish and some solid numbers depending on the float.  Just last week we had a guest land a 30″ brown on the rusty trombone.  Well folks, thats your current report.  If you’re in the area stop in and see us!

NORTH PLATTE RIVER FLY FISHING REPORT 1/25/2020

Fishing has been great this week! Weekend temps look awesome, highs in the low 40’s and upper 30’s. Upper Grey Reef down to Lusby has opened and is floatable, we don’t know about anything lower than that. Shoulder season rates are going until March 14th $450 for a full day guided trip, 2 nights in a cottage and full day guided trip for $650
Fremont/cardwell is still at 500 CFS and will be there through mid February. They are doing warranty work on the power plant and are diverting the water through the meadow/canyon until they’re done. With this larger water focus your efforts on the slowest water you can find. Inside corners and tail outs have all been producing.
Miracle mile is also fishing well! The road out there is definitely passable, just be cautious of side roads. The drifts can be deceivingly bad. Fishing has been good nymphing, but especially with streamers. Keep your retrieve slow!
The BigHorn in Thermopolis fished great this week! Nymphing was solid with leeches, Annelids, and sow bugs. Streamer fishing was also productive, the olive peanut envy was our best fly. Fishing the slower flats with a fast retrieve on a sinking line worked best for us. We are offering a shoulder season special $475 for 1 day and $450/day for a multiple day trip!
Nymphs: BH Brassie, Flashbag Midge, Red Midge Larva, Juju Midge, leeches, Reef Worms, and Scuds.
Streamers: Rusty Trombone, Goldie, Kreelex, peanut Envy, DWFC Flash Minnow.
Dries: Brooks Sprout Midge, small Parachute Adams, Matt’s Midge, and a Griffiths Gnat.
As always if you want to book a trip or have any questions stop by the shop or give us a call at 307-232-9128

Beautiful Days and Melting Snow

As a lot of you may have seen, central Wyoming was hit with a big snow storm last week. Snow accumulations varied in the area and drifts have piled high. A lot of our boat ramps were not usable because of this. However, this didn’t stop us from getting out and enjoying the beautiful weather for the days that followed.  We weren’t the only ones! This was a busy weekend for the Grey Reef stretch. Quite a few boats out there. With our private access we can often avoid traffic and this is what we did! The fishing has been pretty good the last few days and has produced some very healthy, well wintered, fat trout. This time of year there is a variety of food the fish are eating. From midges and annelids, all the way to worms and leeches. This definitely makes the choice of what to use easy.  Even though the water temps are sitting at 38°F to 42°F, the trout are fighting hard! Let em run! If you haven’t already, get your trips booked at The Reef Fly Shop.

Just a quick update on the spring Flush. It has been postponed to March 29th and it will now be a full 10 day flush. We will continue to update on this if there are any other changes.

With the recent snow and drifts, it had made the road to the Miracle Mile not passable. Many who tried over the weekend were in for a shock. Turning around to head back to the Grey Reef and even getting stuck themselves. This has recently changed. The plow has opened the main road up and a few are making the drive over now. The roads along the river are still bad so be careful out there and good luck! Share your pictures with us on Facebook or Instagram. We would love to see how everyone is doing!

Warmer temperatures and some beautiful days are in the forecast. With all the snow sitting around, this can cause for some cloudy river conditions. Sometimes this may lead to fishing a little different or even fishing some different locations.  Be flexible and trust your guides. You never know, it may turn into an unexpected adventure of a lifetime. Give us a call and get your next adventure booked!

Happy Thanksgiving- North Platte River Fly Fishing Report

Its late November and the fishing is great! Fishing on all three tailwaters has been good, especially on the Reef and at Fremont. The off-season is a great time to experience Grey Reef, big feisty fish and close to zero crowds makes for a great time. We will be closed tomorrow for Thanksgiving and will be open again on Friday from 8-12.

Miracle Mile 500 CFS- The Mile has been fishing pretty well but has been getting pounded with people. Scuds, leeches, san juan worms, pheasant tails, and midges have been good out there. Swinging streamers can also be effective, the goldie or the rusty trombone are always our go-tos.

Fremont/cardwell-500 CFS Even with the higher flows the fishing has been great! Streamers and nymphing has been solid with some dry action on the right afternoons. PSL’s, hot head leeches. Reef worms, scuds, and midges are all catching them. The streamer bite is really good on the more overcast days right now.

Grey reef- 500 CFS Fishing has been just fantastic on the Reef. Definitely the most consistent fishing around. Plenty of big fat rainbows and a good amount of browns being caught. Everyone is asking if the grass is out of the reef yet, it’s not but its really fishable. The grass plays a really important part of keeping our river so healthy, the fish like it and so should we. Amber scuds, hot head leeches, pheasant tails, PALs, Macgruber Midge, and UV emergers are all on the menu. Streamer fishing has also been good, keep your retrieve really slow with a few pops here and there. Goldie, rusty trombone, peanut envy, heisenberg have been our favorite patterns.

Its really important to watch out for spawning fish this time of year, please respect the fish and leave them alone. We are seeing tons of people fishing on the redds, especially at the Mile.

Come see us now through the end of the year and check out some of our sale items, we have some wicked deals on great gear and clothing! Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

Fall Fishing at its Finest!

Fishing has been excellent the past few weeks with great fish being caught on dries, streamers, and nymphs! Flows are all down to their winter levels. Weather looks great the next few days, highs in the 50’s, lows in the 30’s. There has been little to no crowds on the river, especially mid-week. Fish have been smashing dry flies on the right days, tricos in the morning with psuedos and baetis coming off strong in the afternoon.

Fremont/Cardwell-75 CFS- Nymphing has been solid all day with fish looking up for a dry fly at certain times of the day. Prince nymphs, Rs2’s, PAL’s, and  Zebra Midges all picking up fish. A Parachute Adams has been our best dry fly, size #16 or #18. Streamers have also been working on the more overcast days, a rusty trombone or articulated goldie have been the go-tos.

Miracle Mile- 500 CFS- Fishing has been pretty good out there, San Juan worms, Prince nymphs, pheasant tails, tailwater tinys, and rs2’s have been our best flies. The road is actually in good condition, as always that can change with some nasty weather.

Grey Reef- 500 CFS- Fishing has been great from the Reef all the way below Casper. Fish have really been looking up throughout the whole river system. Parachute Adams have been the go-to pattern. There are weeds on the upper section but it is still plenty fishable. The weeds do dissipate as you get further down river. San Juans, Prince nymphs, Pulsating emergers, real deal point fly, and RS2’s are the flies to have, we are running anywhere from 3-5′ indicator to weight with a “b” or a “bb” as your weight.

As Always if you have any questions don’t hesitate to stop by the shop or give us a call with any questions!

Flows on the rise!

All 3 tailwaters saw a bump in flows! Tuesday started the rise in flows. Its looking like we should see a plateau for the weekend as the reservoirs are filling up. Currently Pathfinder is at 95%, Alcova is at 98%, and Grey Reef Reservoir is at 94%. The warm weather this week has really accelerated the melting.

Grey Reef- 4000 cfs

Fremont- 1800 cfs

Miracle Mile- 4500 cfs

Our guides have been using a meat and potatoes rig. Red or purple San Juan worms, Reef Worms in red or purple, PSL leech patterns in brown, natural, or black, and emerger patterns such as RS2 foam post and Mayhem Midge. Rigs have been running anywhere between 4-6 ft weight to indicator, and 2 BBs or 1 3/0 for your split shot. Look for the slower moving water on the seams or fishing towards the banks. The big water years bring out some of the best fishing and an opportunity to catch a trout of a lifetime! For those of you who haven’t heard we added 3 new Hyde Skiffs to our rental fleet!  So, if you don’t feel like hauling your boat around we have you covered!

Fishing Report for Grey Reef, Miracle Mile, and Fremont Canyon

There’s a little break in the weather this weekend and we all have fishing on the brain. Fishing has been solid on all three tailwaters lately. Especially on the warmer days, even just a little change in the water temperature and the fish go crazy!

Fremont/Cardwell-75 CFS- Fishing has been good the past few weeks with some nice fishing being caught. Fishing are hanging out in the slower deeper water right now on all three tailwaters, not just at Fremont. Leeches, scuds, and reef worms followed up by a small midge have been working well.

Miracle Mile-500 CFS- Make sure to call and check the road conditions before heading out there this time of year. The road was not good for a period of time this winter. Fishing has been great out there. Swinging or slow stripping streamers has been really good depending on the day, a goldie in size #4 has been the ticket. Otherwise nymphing has been good. Scuds and leeches followed up with a zebra midge or the reef’s PAL has been money.

Grey Reef-500 CFS- Fishing has been really good the past few weeks, mainly focusing on the first few miles below the dam. Streamers and nymphs both producing some nice fish! The nymphing has been good with the same flies mentioned above, a leech, Reef Worm, or Deep Purple down to a PAL or black zebra midge has been good. You’ll find most of those fish staying in the deeper slower water. Typically when you find one fish this time of year there’s plenty more hanging in the same spot.

As always if you have any questions stop by the shop or drop us a line. Our winter Hours are Thursday- Monday 8-2. Hope to see everyone up here enjoying some nice weather and outstanding fishing.

North Platte Thanksgiving Week Fishing Report

It’s finally starting to feel like November and the fishing is good! With some weather rolling in this week we should start seeing those nice cloudy days that all streamer fisherman have been waiting for. Fishing has been good on all three tailwaters, with Grey Reef and Miracle Mile being the best options.

Fremont/Cardwell-75 CFS- Fish has been good on some days and not so good on others. Smaller midge patterns has been the most consistent. Dead drifting leeches has also been good especially in the pocket water.

Grey Reef-500 CFS- The weeds have really started to clear out this past week and we’re consistently catching good fish. Fishing has been excellent in the mornings and tapering off some in the afternoons. Pine squirrel leeches, Hot Head leeches, and scuds followed up by a midge pattern (Reef’s PAL or Zebra midges in various colors) have all been good bugs. We’re fishing on the deeper and heavier side 4-6 ft indicator to weight with 1-3 B’s has been a good set up.

Miracle Mile-500 CFS- Fishing has remained good out at the Mile, it has been crowded though, especially on the weekends. The streamer bite has been off and on, cloudy days are your best bet for streamers, but the nymphing has been consistently good. Leeches, scuds, egg patterns, pats rubber legs, and midges have all been getting nice fish. Watch out for any Redds out there, make sure you don’t step on any. It’s best to leave those fish alone.

This week especially it is good to think about all of the things we are thankful for, 2016 has been a great year for us and that’s because of you. All of our guests that stopped by the shop, went on trips, stayed in the lodge or cottages, you guys made our year great. Thank You. Oh and big brown trout, we are very thankful for them as well!

North Platte Fishing Report- Grey Reef, Miracle Mile, and Fremont Canyon

Fall fishing is here! Though the dry fly fishing has tapered off a little bit the streamer fishing has picked up. Our guides have had some great streamer days recently. Streamers on the smaller side in black, olive, or grey have been the ticket, the Thin Mint is a great fly right now. The weather has been very mild with highs in the 60’s and it looks to stay that way for the next week or so. Be sure to check the bottom of this post for our off season cottage and fishing specials!

Fremont/Cardwell-75 CFS- Fishing has been pretty good in the meadow and the canyon, with some days being better than others. Small and grey seems to be the ticket up there right now. The reefs PULS emerger or a grey mayhem midge have been great trailer flies; pair those with a Bead head pheasant tail or hare’s ear above. Depth and weight are a big factor, start with a lighter, shorter rig and get deeper and heavier if needed.

Miracle Mile-500 CFS- Fishing has been consistently good and the crowds have seemed to drop off a little bit.. Leeches, San Juans, hare’s ears, and RS2’s have been our top bugs. Fishing anywhere from 2’-6’ indicator to weight with a bb as the weight.  We are seeing a few browns caught out there, be sure to watch out for any redds and stay off of them.

Grey Reef- Casper 500 CFS- The weeds are dissipating and the fishing has been great! Fishing around 3′-5′ indicator to weight with 1-3 #4 size weights with a #18 BH hare’s ear above a #18-20 Chocolate RS2 has been getting it done. The Reef’s PAL has also been a go-to. The streamer bite has also picked up, look for those nasty cloudy days for your best streamer fishing.
