TroutTown

We are emerging, finally, from the Grey Reef deep freeze. One bonus about this weather system was the waterfowl hunting was pretty spectacular. Grey Reef is open and floatable on the upper and should open up through the narrows today. Expect excellent streamer production this week. This is not an unusual phenomenon after these types of weather situations. We are happy to announce seasonable conditions upcoming with highs in the 30s +. Nymphing will remain solid with scuds, midges, leeches and worms….traditional winter menu. There will be late day dry fly activity on calm afternoons. Midge hatches are prolific throughout the winter season and they will attract trout to the surface. This normally happens in slick/smooth water so presentation and timing is important. Streamers! That is the talk this time of year and lots of patterns will get the job done. One slower days trail your pick with a crawdizzle or even a big scud…they can’t be resisted. Miracle Mile Fly Fishing has been solid and improving quite a bit since the hit and miss production of the past several months. Streamers at Miracle Mile? Yes! Sleeper patterns include Platte River Specials and Orange Blossom Specials. Fremont is doing well and streamers are getting it done there. Light nymph rigs ands dry fly all producing so be prepared!

We cancelled a lot of trips this past week and weekend and if you are still chomping to hunt for the trophy trout Grey Reef’s most experienced guide staff is ready to go. Wade fishing played a major part in our very successful Trophy Trips last year. Nobody has the advantage we have with our quantity of private access. Only one other outfitter in the region offers meaningful access and we have about 3 times their quantity.

We will be offering our winter season specials that will include one night in a cottage at The Reef fly Shop plus a full day guided fishing trip for 2. INCLUDES our private access and the region’s nicest and most convenient lodging/location.
