Wyoming Fly Fishing in February

Grey Reef and Miracle Mile fishing have been very productive and this won’t change anytime soon. Our weather, excluding 2 weeks in December, has been insanely nice. We did just receive a few inches yesterday evening but it is mostly gone and expecting highs near 50 today. Even the wind issue has been very kind. Streamer activity at Grey Reef was hit and miss yesterday, had us scratching our head. Nymping was solid on a PAL/Pulsating Emerger rig or Rusty Scud/Foam Wing RS2 rig. Miracle Mile trout not responding gingerly to a crossing streamer…if you know what I mean? Nymping strong with Miracle Mile on a beady leech/flash WD40 rig. Fremont Canyon on par with both of it’s bigger siblings. We are expecting (hoping really) that February brings a wrath of snow. This will put a squeeze on our business but we think the trade off is so much better for the resource. That being said, take advantage of it! The Reef Fly Shop has cottages ready and guides enjoying their early start to the 2015 season.

April has some good availability at the lodge. This is “feed bag” month at Grey Reef. Trout are voracious on midges and especially the spring Baetis Hatch or Blue Winged Olive. Big trout will nudge up to ledges and take emergers. Sight nymphing is an amazing experience! The rainbow spawn will also be in full swing so eggs will be a popular food source. April fishing is arguably the most productive of the season. If you like to hook lots of big rainbows April is your month.
