Winter in Wyoming, Deep and Drifted Snow

Wyoming has been pounded by a high caliber winter storm. Fishing has been put on the back burner for the past couple days but upper Grey Reef is in excellent condition. Miracle Mile will likely see some real solitude for the next few days. Don’t go out there, it is rowdy and we may never hear from you again. The lower elevations including the lodge and fly shop received 15″-20″ and our higher elevations on Casper Mountain 36″. Hogadon Basin, our local ski hill, struggled to open one run and now they have 100% of the area opened. Our Nordic Center had a crew of folks shoveling snow onto the cross country ski trails for the high school ski race last weekend…now it is consumed with snow and completely groomed. Our back country trail, Eadsville, has been stomped in and should be good for fat bikes by Sunday but it is great for skiing and snow shoeing right now. Call our local retailers like Crazy Pedaler, Gear Up, Mountain Sports or Zeelo’s for snow shoe, ski or fat bike rentals. I mention this only because we are expecting high winds the next several days and fishing may be a struggle. But, if you are in the area the top of Casper Mountain is THE place to escape and do some fun winter activities. The snowmobile trails should also be groomed and ready to go. If you need a last minute gift for the Grey Reef angler or want to cruise around Casper, stop into the Ugly Bug Fly Shop. This is a beautiful store. Santa’s workshop is in Downtown Casper, in the same neighborhood as a pile of galleries, outdoor, western, shoe, toy and clothing stores( with an even distribution of eateries and pubs). Ft. Casper hosts a historic, frontier Christmas and you can head to the east side for Christmas chaos if that is your speed. We never want for this to do around Central Wyoming.
